The future of nuclear power involves difficult issues: economics, waste disposal, safety, proliferation and an energy policy that is specific to each country.
This talk will present the perspectives of development on nuclear power and nuclear waste management in France. The impact of the 15 years of research on nuclear waste in the framework of the 1991 Waste Act (Loi Bataille) will be presented.
Some of the key findings are that effective and acceptable technical solutions for the long-term management of the radioactive waste produced by current reactors do exist and could be gradually implemented. Although practical experience in building and operating geologic repositories for high-level waste is still mainly limited to a few pilot-scale facilities, there is today a high level of confidence within the scientific and technical community that the geologic repository approach is capable of safely isolating the waste from the biosphere for as long as it poses significant risks.
