High Power Proton Linear Accelerator Use for Nuclear Physics and Energy

Yanglai Cho, Argonne National Laboratory
Bldg. 6008 Conference Room

The SNS linac is the first proton linac utilizing radio-frequency superconductivity technology, and is capable of accelerating protons to multi-MW beam power level. Since the conversion of the SNS linac from warm to cold technology, there have been a number of design studies to use s/c linac for nuclear physics and nuclear energy, and these machines are quite similar to the SNS linac. Brief reviews of the EU funded design studies of EURISOL (European ISOL) and XADS (experimental accelerator driven system for nuclear energy and waste transmutation) will be given. Then I will discuss what it takes to facilitate a EURISOL-like facility with the SNS linac and why a EURISOL-like facility is prudent to build.
