Overcoming Neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM) Engineering Challenges

John Clinton Ramsey, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM
Bldg. 6008 Large Conference Room

The experiment to measure the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM), currently being developed for SNS Flight Path 13, is expected to provide two orders of magnitude improved sensitivity over the current world class measurement. This is a complex apparatus presenting many significant engineering challenges. We will discuss the apparatus and facility plans, highlighting key engineering aspects throughout. Challenges to be addressed include stringent requirements for utilizing non-metallic and non-magnetic components at cryogenic temperatures, sealing such components, and demanding assembly and repair scenarios. We will also present strategies for meeting these challenges and bringing assemblies from collaborating institutions across the country to integrate them into a successful system at the SNS.
