In 1944, Yoshio Nishina, Chief Scientist of RIKEN, completed his second cyclotron. It was one of the largest cyclotrons in the world at the time, butwas disassembled after the World War II. This cyclotron of tragic fate epitomized the impossible dream of Nishina, the father of nuclear physics in Japan. Today in 2017, we are operating the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) which delivers the uranium beam with the world’s highest intensity, recording 50 pnA in 2016. With the use of this powerful beam, many experiments are being performed by diverse groups of researchers from all over the world who are
producing many new data which were just a dream only several years ago. Also, three atoms of nihonium, the 113th element, have been synthesized utilizing the injector of RI beam factory. The impossible dreams of Yoshio Nishina have finally come true. This talk provides the recent status of RIBF, a brief history and the future prospects of physics direction and an accelerator plan.
