Wheeler's Inventive Mind and Toroidal Nuclei

John A. Wheeler's inventive mind covered vast areas, from single-electron universe, wormholes, blackholes, it-from-bit, superheavy nuclei, toroidal nuclei, and many others.  We will review some of Wheeler's notable ideas and their influence on those who were associated with him.  We will then focus on toroidal nuclei for which Wheeler suggested that under appropriate conditions a nucleus may assume a toroidal shape.  Favorable conditions for a toroidal nucleus may be the presence of an excessive charge, the nuclear shell effect, and/or a large angular momentum.  We shall present a review of recent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock findings [1-5] and explore ways how Wheeler's toroidal nuclei may be produced.
