The advent of easily manageable, widely tunable, and powerful high repetition rate solid state lasers has drastically enlarged the scope of laser spectroscopic activities on exotic isotopes. Within this development the resonance ionization laser ion source RILIS, which is nowadays intensely used at all major on-line ISOL facilities worldwide, is converted into a powerful tool for atomic physics studies aiming for the specific exploration on radioisotopes. Apart from the detailed analysis of optical spectra and the precision determination of so far unknown ionization potentials, focus is given to the development of resonant laser ionization schemes for efficient and selective ion beam generation. Future applications on one side point to high resolution spectroscopy, on the other side the research centers on actinide elements, even envisaging studies towards the heaviest elements known.
