Physics Division Seminars

Physics Division Seminars bring us speakers on a variety of physics related subjects. Usually these are held in the Building 6008 large Conference Room, at 3:00 pm on the chosen day, but times and locations may vary. For more information, contact our seminar chairman,

The LUNA (Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics) Experiment at Gran Sasso, Italy

Alessandra Guglielmetti, University of Milan, Italy
Building 6008 Conference Room

The LUNA collaboration installed a facility to measure cross sections of nuclear reactions of astrophysical interest in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Here, the cosmic ray background reduction allows us to measure cross sections down to femtobarn level at the very low energy of Gamow peak in stars and therefore avoid ambiguous extrapolations from higher energy values.

The most important results reached by this experiment for hydrogen burning fusion reactions will be reviewed, in particular for the most recently studied reaction 3He(4He, gamma)7Be. Ongoing and future projects will also be given.
