Physics Division Seminars

Physics Division Seminars bring us speakers on a variety of physics related subjects. Usually these are held in the Building 6008 large Conference Room, at 3:00 pm on the chosen day, but times and locations may vary. For more information, contact our seminar chairman,

Stellar Explosions and the Origin of the Heavy Elements

Hendrik Schatz, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI
Building 6008 Conference Room

The origin of the heavy elements in nature is one of the big open questions in nuclear astrophysics. What is clear is that the rapid neutron capture process played a key role, but where the process takes place and what its exact nature is remains unknown. I will summarize the open questions and recent advances in our understanding of the r-process from astronomical observations and nuclear physics experiments. In particular, I will present results from the experimental program at Michigan State University's NSCL.
