Revitalization of Nuclear Energy in the United States

Jim Rushton, NSTD Division, ORNL
Building 6008 Conference Room

The need for clean electric power sources, concerns about global climate change, and the rising costs of fossil fuels have resulted in a renewed examination of nuclear power in the United States. In 2005, the new Energy Policy Act provided authorization for a package of incentives for the construction of advanced nuclear electric generation facilities. New reactor designs with improved safety and economic performance have been developed by the three major reactor vendors. Consolidation of ownership of the existing 104 U.S. nuclear plants has resulted in generating companies that have expertise in nuclear power and interest in its expansion. A new licensing framework has been established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The presentation will provide an update on recent national and industrial initiatives contributing to the revitalization of nuclear energy in the United States.
