Physics Division Seminars

Physics Division Seminars bring us speakers on a variety of physics related subjects. Usually these are held in the Building 6008 large Conference Room, at 3:00 pm on the chosen day, but times and locations may vary. For more information, contact our seminar chairman,

7Be + p and 3He + 4He Fusion Reactions and Neutrino Astrophysics

Kurt A. Snover, University of Washington, Seattle, WA
Building 6008 Conference Room

The 7Be + p and 3He + 4He fusion reactions are important steps in the solar p-p chain that lead to the production of neutrinos from decay of 8B and 7Be in the Sun. In addition 3He + 4He fusion is important for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis since essentially all of the 7Li produced in the BB was made from decay of Be produced in this reaction. I will discuss the present status of measurements of these reaction rates, the Standard Solar Model, and implications for solar neutrino studies including limits on sterile neutrinos.
