Introduction
The 4th International Conference on Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses
(ENAM'04) will be held September 12-16, 2004, at the Southern Pines
Conference Center at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, USA.
ENAM originated from the merged AMCO and NFFS conference series held
in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany, in 1992. The first ENAM was held in
1995 in Arles, France. The second and third ENAM meetings were held
in 1998 (Bellaire, Michigan, USA) and 2001 (Hämeenlinna, Finland).
This Circular contains information about the structure of the program,
a call for submission of abstracts, and information on the conference
site and registration.
Scope of the Conference
The program will consist of invited review talks on major
developments in the area of exotic nuclei and atomic masses,
and of selected oral and poster contributions on important
experimental and theoretical topics.
Topics to be covered include:
- Fundamental constants, atomic masses, and nuclear moments and radii
- Forms of radioactivity
- Nuclear structure, nuclei at the drip lines, cluster phenomena
- Reactions with radioactive ion beams
- Nuclear astrophysics
- Fundamental symmetries and interactions
- Heaviest elements and fission
- Radioactive ion beam production and experimental developments
- Applications of exotic nuclei
Conference Program
A preliminary list of confirmed
invited speakers
selected by the International Advisory Committee can be found on the
conference website. Additionally, the program will include
oral and poster presentations selected on the basis of the submitted
abstracts by the Organizing and Advisory Committees.
Contributors will be notified by email before May 31, 2004.
Call for Abstracts
Presentations at the conference will take the form of invited talks,
contributed talks, and posters. We would like to request all those wishing
to contribute to the conference, including the invited speakers, to submit
their abstracts by April 15, 2004.
The abstracts should be one page and written according to instructions
given on ENAM'04 website. All abstracts will be reviewed and all selected
abstracts will be designated for an oral or poster presentation.
The Book of Abstracts will be handed out to all registered participants
during conference registration. The electronically submitted abstracts
will be available on the conference website after June 1.
Poster Session
Historically, the poster session is very important to the meeting and
is expected to be large. We anticipate that the poster session will
extend over two evenings and posters should remain available for the
duration of the conference with two official sessions on Monday and
Tuesday evenings after dinner. Exact information about the size and
format of posters will be posted on the ENAM'04 website.
Proceedings
In order to widely disseminate information gathered at this
conference, the proceedings will be published in the
European Physics Journal A Direct of Springer Publishing.
The advantages of this choice are:
- All contributions including posters are eligible and will be
peer-reviewed.
- All contributions which pass the peer-review process will
be published on-line within 3 weeks of manuscript delivery to the
publisher and will receive a journal citation.
- Participants will receive a printed volume with all the submitted
contributions.
- Contributions submitted after the deadline will not delay prompt
publishing of other contributions.
- A hard date to close the proceedings volume is given.
More details, including templates and format information, will be
given at a later date. The deadline for submitting the contributions is
October 1, 2004. The proceedings will be closed January 15, 2005.
The printed version of the proceedings will be mailed to all participants
in Summer 2005.
Language
The official conference language is English.
Location and Venue
Callaway Gardens is located about 70 miles southwest of Atlanta
in Pine Mountain, Georgia and is easily accessible by car or shuttle
from Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport. Callaway is an
award-winning, 14,000-acre gardens, resort and preserve nestled
in the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The
gardens and attractions such as the butterfly pavilion and
horticultural center are accessible via car or a 10-mile bicycle trail.
Activities include golf, tennis, swimming, bicycling, fly-fishing, and
target shooting. The average high/low temperatures for September is 84/61 F
(29/16 C).
The Southern Pines Conference Center at Callaway opened in the fall
of 2002 with over 2000 square meters of meeting space. The meeting
will take place in the large hall of the center and all accommodations
and meals will be on-site.
Structure of the Meeting
The conference sessions will begin on Sunday, September 12, at
approximately 8:30 am and will end on Thursday, September 16, at
approximately 6:30 pm.
We anticipate having three two-hour sessions each day with
a long break in the afternoon to enjoy the gardens. Each session will
cover specific areas and consist of invited and contributed presentations.
In order to highlight the best posters,
we plan to offer 5-minute oral presentations to a number of poster
contributions. Those contributions will be treated as contributed talks,
and they will appear as such in the proceedings. In addition, we plan to have
informal student/postdoc discussion sessions in the evenings. Speakers
from the day's sessions and the leaders in the field will be asked to
make themselves available to lead the discussion and answer questions
about science and related topics. Such sessions were well received at
ENAM'98.
There will be no parallel sessions. Meals will be served close to the
meeting area. The banquet will be held on Wednesday evening.
A welcome reception will take place on the evening of September 11.
Since Callaway Gardens has so many activities, there will not be an excursion.
Conference Fees
The conference fee will be 380 USD if paid on or before August 1, 2004.
After this date, a 100 USD late fee will be charged. The conference
fee includes a printed copy of the proceedings and abstract book,
all breaks, conference banquet, entertainment, and other conference materials
and services.
Lodging and Meals
The conference center is a short walk from the
Southern Pine Cottages.
Each cottage consists of two private bedrooms with attached baths.
The common area includes a fully equipped kitchen, a family room with a
fireplace and television, and a screened porch with ceiling fan. Although
an entire cottage may be reserved, the preferred accommodation is a
half-cottage. As each half-cottage has two large beds, the most
economical mode is for two participants to share a half-cottage
(quarter-cottage option). All meals (September 12-16) for the
participant are included in the accommodations (September 11-16).
The price (1 participant) for room and board are:
- Quarter cottage and meals (shared bedroom/bath): 760 USD
- Half-cottage and meals (Private bedroom/bath): 1220 USD
- Private cottage and meals: 2150 USD
Meals and accommodations will be reserved and paid through the
ENAM'04 website and not with Callaway Gardens.
Note that accompanying persons may stay in the private and
half-cottage options at no additional charge. See below for
more information on accompanying persons.
Entrance to the gardens is included with your paid accommodations.
No refunds are possible for any parts of the package not taken.
If you intend to attend only part of the conference, please contact the
organizers.
Check-in time is at 4:00 pm on September 11 and check-out time is
11:00 am on September 17.
Registration and Accommodation Reservation
Accommodation in the conference hotel can only be guaranteed if
reservation and payment are received on or before
August 1, 2004. Payment may be made using
checks, credit card (Mastercard or Visa), or bank transfer.
We prefer not to receive large amounts of cash at
the conference. Cancellations must be received on or before
August 5, 2004. After this date, we cannot be certain
we will be able to return your payment. Note that a 100 USD fee may be
applied to all cancellations.
Travel Information
The easiest way to travel to Callaway Gardens is to fly to Atlanta's
Hartsfield International Airport (ATL) which is located southwest of
downtown. The Gardens are approximately 1 hour southwest of the airport
by interstate highway for all but a few miles. Callaway offers an
airport shuttle with one-way charges of approximately 60-80 USD (price
depends on type of service and includes taxes/gratuities). Car rental
at the airport is also available. For details see ENAM'04 website.
During the conference everything should be within walking distance, and
tram service will be available if we have an event at a location other
than the Southern Pines. We also hope to have bicycles available for
rent at 5 USD per day. Bicycles are the preferred mode of
transportation at the Gardens with a 10-mile (16 km) bicycle trail
meandering through the resort and leading to the various attractions.
Cars are also permitted inside the Gardens; however motorcycles are not
allowed.
Accompanying persons
You are encouraged to bring companions as Callaway Gardens is
a resort which offers many attractions. There is no additional
charge for accommodations when your companions stay in your half-cottage
or private cottage. Each half of the cottage has two large beds which
can sleep four persons. Meals for companions may be purchased from the
conference secretary. Entrance into the gardens is included in your
accommodations. Bicycles may be rented on-site. Meals can be arranged
in advance at the conference office. Note that each cottage has a fully
equipped kitchen.
Financial Assistance
Limited funds are available for participants of
the conference with emphasis on young scientists. Those
requesting financial assistance are asked to apply
for support no later than June 15, 2004.
Visas
Since September 11, 2001, visa applications are now subject to a greater
degree of scrutiny than in the past. The timeframes for visa processing
today are difficult to predict with accuracy for any individual applicant,
and will vary significantly by country. Because of this, we have registered
ENAM'04 with the U.S. Department of State and provide information links
on our website. If you require a visa, you are strongly encouraged
by the Department of State to apply before May 31, 2004.
If you require a letter from the organizers please allow sufficient time
for us to process your request.
Insurance
All participants are encouraged to obtain health insurance prior to
arriving to the United States. The conference cannot provide
insurance to the attendees. Hospitals and medical services are
located nearby.
