The Physics Division Operations Manager (DOM) is responsible for non-accelerator-related operations activities. Functions reporting to the DOM include the Division Environment, Safety and Health Officer (ESH Officer), the Division Radiation Control Officer (DRCO), the Division Training Coordinator (DTC), and the Division Quality Assurance Coordinator, as well as activities related to procurement, labor relations, emergency response, and the Division library. In addition, the DOM is charged with maintaining the Physics Division Reference Manual ("blue book"), which contains organizational information, and Division Programs and Procedures discussed in this report.
The Physics Division Operations Office strives for cost-effective excellence in Division operations. As a result of our involvement in ORNL activities related to our work, we are familiar with present issues at ORNL and this provides us with the knowledge to look ahead and try to position the Division so any changes will have minimum impact on our research activities. An example of this is provided in the Waste section, where we noted that our waste disposal costs are very low compared to similar divisions. We also believe that our radiation protection programs, experiment review programs, and training development programs are "ahead of the curve," as is our use of the WWW.
Our next Triennial Assessment will be this year, and we are watching developments related to overhauls of this program so we will be ready for any new methodology used in the Assessment activity. We also continue to monitor developments related to waste management, as the financial impact to our Division could be significant. Finally, ISMS program development will continue, with emphasis on worker involvement and job hazard evaluation.
