ISOL'01 Final Circular

This is the final circular for the International Conference on Physics with Radioactive Ion Beams ISOL'01 to be held in Oak Ridge March 11-14, 2001. ISOL'01 will focus on nuclear physics studies with radioactive ion beams at ISOL facilities. The meeting is dedicated to the celebration of twenty years of science at the Holifield Facility. The timing of the meeting coincides with the concluding period of the long range plan for Nuclear Science in the U.S., which will be crucial for the future of the Rare Isotope Accelerator, and also with a number of exciting radioactive ion beam developments worldwide. ISOL'01 will address the burning physics questions as well as the technical challenges of the ISOL world.

The Program

Current information on ISOL'01, including the program and abstracts, can be found at http://www.phy.ornl.gov/hribf/isol01/

Scheduling information

The conference will open at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 11, and will close at 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14. Sunday will be devoted to celebrating the Holifield Anniversary with a tour of the laboratory and a series of historical talks. Monday's program will concentrate on ISOL facilities throughout the world. The remainder of the program will concentrate on the physics addressed with radioactive ion beams.

Registration

Participants are requested to fill in the registration form which may be found on our secure web server. The cost of the conference will be 250 USD (150 USD for students) if payment is received on or prior to January 31, 2001. It will be 300 USD (200 USD for students) if payment occurs on or after February 1, 2001. Credit cards and checks will be accepted. The registration fee will cover the admission to sessions, program booklet, reception, conference dinner, lunches, and refreshments at breaks. Lunch (and conference dinner) tickets for accompanying persons will be available for a nominal fee.

Financial Support

A limited number of conference grants are available to aid students and postdoctoral fellows. Requests, containing a brief description of research interests, should be sent to the conference secretary at isol01@mail.phy.ornl.gov.

Posters and Abstracts

The poster session will be held on Monday evening. One poster will be selected for an oral presentation (15 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion) on Wednesday afternoon. Please contact Prof. Carrol Bingham (cbingham@utk.edu) for details of the poster session and let him know whether you wish to present a poster. If you wish your poster to be included in the Book of Abstracts, please submit a one-page abstract not later than March 1, 2001. Our preferred format is portable document format (pdf) although postscript (ps) will be accepted and converted to pdf. Specific instructions for submitting abstracts can be found at http://www.phy.ornl.gov/hribf/isol01/abstracts/. We will post all suitable abstracts on the web site prior to the conference.

Proceedings

All contributions accepted for presentation by the Advisory Committee will be published electronically. A maximum of 10, 5, and 3 pages will be allocated to the authors of the invited talks, contributed talks, and posters, respectively. Authors are requested to transmit their manuscripts to the conference before March 14, 2001. Our preferred format is portable document format (pdf) although postscript (ps) will be accepted and converted to pdf. Specific instructions will be posted on the web site before February 1, 2001. If you have any questions concerning the Proceedings, please contact David Dean at dean@mail.phy.ornl.gov.

Private Visits to Oak Ridge National Laboratory

If you wish to visit Oak Ridge National Laboratory at some time other than as part of the conference activities, you are required to receive beforehand permission from the Laboratory. It has been determined that we no longer need to obtain approval for you to go on the conference tour. Therefore, you will need to obtain permission to visit the laboratory through your host. The length of time required to obtain permission varies depending on affiliation and/or citizenship. In some cases this process will take more than 6 weeks.

Conference site

The conference will be held at the Pollard Auditorium which is located on the campus of Oak Ridge Associated Universities. A site and interior map of Pollard is available on the ISOL'01 web site together with information about Oak Ridge, the Knoxville area, local weather, etc. A number of terminals with internet connection will be available.

Accommodation

The conference hotels are the Garden Plaza Hotel and the Comfort Inn. Other accomodations in the area are the Days Inn, Hampton Inn, Jameson Inn, Oak Ridge Inn and Suites, Ridge Inn, and Super 8. All accommodations are a short walk (<1500 meters) to Pollard Auditorium. Many offer no-smoking rooms. Hotel information is summarized on the ISOL'01 web page. To ensure that you obtain the conference rate, it is advisable to call the local telephone number to make your reservations and remember to mention that you are attending ISOL'01. Deadline for the special rates at all hotels is February 10, 2001.
