ISOL'01 Second Circular |
Note added September 29: The deadline for abstracts has been extended to December 15, 2000.
This is the second announcement for the International Conference on Physics with Radioactive Ion Beams ISOL'01 to be held in Oak Ridge, March 11-14, 2001. ISOL'01 will focus on nuclear physics studies with radioactive ion beams at ISOL facilities. We have several good reasons to organize the meeting in Oak Ridge in 2001. The main reason is, of course, the exciting physics which can be addressed using exotic nuclei. The Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) is the first U.S. ISOL facility specializing in low-energy nuclear physics research. We believe that there is a need for a topical meeting devoted to physics at ISOL facilities worldwide and to ISOL technology - a meeting that will address the burning physics questions as well as technical challenges and limitations. In addition, ISOL'01 is dedicated to the celebration of twenty years of science at the Holifield facility and its continuing leadership role in nuclear physics research.
Current information on ISOL'01 can be found at http://www.phy.ornl.gov/hribf/isol01
The symposium will include the following main topics:
The conference will open at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 11, and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14. Sunday will be devoted to celebrating the Holifield Anniversary with a tour of the laboratory and a series of historical talks. Monday's program will concentrate on ISOL facilities throughout the world. The remainder of the program will concentrate on the physics addressed with radioactive ion beams.
All contributors (including invited speakers) are requested to electronically submit a one-page abstract not later than October 1, 2000. Our preferred format is portable document format (pdf) although postscript (ps) will be accepted and converted to pdf. Specific instructions will be posted on the web site before September 1, 2000. We will post all suitable abstracts on the web site prior to the conference.
All contributions accepted for presentation by the Advisory Committee will be published electronically. A maximum of 10, 5, and 3 pages will be allocated to the authors of the invited talks, contributed talks, and posters, respectively. Authors are requested to transmit their manuscripts to the conference before March 14, 2001. Our preferred format is portable document format (pdf) although postscript (ps) will be accepted and converted to pdf. Specific instructions will be posted on the web site before September 1, 2000.
Participants are requested to fill in the registration form which may be found on our web site and return it to the ISOL'01 secretariat not later than February 1, 2001. The cost of the conference will be 250 USD (150 USD for students) if payment is received on or prior to January 31, 2001. It will be 300 USD (200 USD for students) if payment occurs on or after February 1, 2001. MasterCard (Eurocard), VISA, and checks drawn in U. S. dollars will be accepted. The registration fee will cover the admission to sessions, program booklet, reception, conference dinner, lunches, and refreshments at breaks. The lunch (and conference dinner) tickets for accompanying persons will be available for a nominal fee. Limited funds will be available for students or postdocs to partially support their expenses. Applicants should contact the conference secretariat.
We are presently planning to have a tour of the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility on Sunday followed by an on-site lunch. As both activities are on the property of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, each person is required to receive permission from the Laboratory before he/she will be allowed to participate. The length of time required to obtain permission varies depending on affiliation and/or citizenship. Instructions will be posted on the web site as well as specific deadlines. In some cases this process will take more than 6 weeks.
The conference will be held at the Pollard Auditorium which is located on the campus of Oak Ridge Associated Universities. A site and interior map of Pollard is available at the ISOL'01 web page. Oak Ridge is approximately 30 minutes by car from McGhee-Tyson (Knoxville) airport.
The conference hotels are the Garden Plaza Hotel and the Comfort Inn. Other accomodations in the area are the Days Inn, Hampton Inn, Jameson Inn, Oak Ridge Inn and Suites, Ridge Inn, and Super 8. All accommodations are a short walk (<1500 meters) to Pollard Auditorium. Many offer no-smoking rooms. Hotel information is summarized on the ISOL'01 web page. To ensure that you obtain the conference rate, it is advisable to call the local telephone number to make your reservations and remember to mention that you are attending ISOL'01. Deadline for the special rates at all hotels is February 10, 2001.
