BuildingsSome common names or references for our buildings. Maps of the laboratory are available.
Bldg 6000 = HRIBF Please note that foreign nationals must always use their prox card to enter any building. They cannot just follow some one else inside. Unescorted access to Bldg. 6000 requires training. If you arrive prior to taking this training you will have to call some one to let you in; two outside telephones are indicated on the maps above. During normal operating hours (8 am - 4:30 pm), you can call the users office at 574.4113. The number of the accelerator control room is 574.4720. The RMS counting room is 576.4852, the DRS counting room is 576.7388, and the OLTF counting room is 576.8766.
Visitor Wireless NetworkOur visitor wireless network is 802.11b/g. It is available in our counting rooms and most of the research offices in building 6000, 6007, 6008, 6025 and 6010. Users should come with a card compatible with this kind of networking. They should have it configured and working beforehand, as our ability to support all possible cards is limited. Laptops brought in should have up-to-date operating systems fully patched and with up-to-date virus protection. For Windows, this means Windows 2000 or Windows XP. For Macintosh, it means Mac OS X 10.3 or 10.4. Linux laptops should similarly be configured carefully and be up-to-date. A description of the procedure to access the network is available from the ORNL web site. The wireless network is the only way a non-ORNL owned laptop can be attached to our networks.
Data acquisition and other HRIBF softwareAll experimental workstations and the computer room (T-210) have notebooks which provide printed manuals for the standard HRIBF data acquistion and analysis software. These manuals can be also reprinted by typing dodoc filename.doc on any data acquisition computer.
Places in the LabBuilding 5700 has a long corridor located along its entire length which is called "Main Street". Along with corridor you will find the offices of the ORNL Credit Union including at ATM machine. In addition, a small stand operated by the Hot Bagel Company opens at 6:30 am and offers bagels until 10:30 am and gourmet coffee until 1:00 pm. The cafeteria is open for lunches only. A shuttle is available for those who do not wish to walk. Link is accessible only from inside the laboratory. A short boardwalk is available for strolls around the Swan pond located between HRIBF and the cafeteria.
Driving inside the LabIt is very important to obey the speed limits inside the laboratory. The lab is very concerned about the safety of our security personnel at the portals. Radar and camera "speed traps" have been established at each portal and the Oak Ridge Police Department may also patrol Bethel Valley Road. Access to the lab can be terminated for flagrant violations and/or routine disregard of the speed limits. The speed limit at each portal and within the lab (unless otherwise posted) is 25 MPH. Numerous traffic accidents each year are caused by deer crossing Bethel Valley Road. Deer are particularly active at night though many deer are struck during daylight. It is usually better to strike the deer than to swerve and lose control of the car as you might end up in oncoming traffic or striking a tree. Parking can be difficult to find near the HRIBF. Park only in marked parking spaces or tickets may be issued. In cases where fire department access may be restricted or other serious situations, your car may be towed and you will be charged. Overflow parking may be found on the opposite branch of the visitor center roundabout.
WildlifeThere can be numerous forms of wildlife around the lab. These animals are wild and will bite if you get too close to them. Some animals that you may see are ground hogs, skunks, racoons, opossums, deer, snakes (copperheads and rattlesnakes are poisonous!), turtles, and manybirds such as vultures and hawks. Beware of deer when driving, particularly at night. |
