Welcome to the ISOL'01 Conference Home Page. Here you will find all the information you need about this conference. A summary of important deadlines and dates may be found by following this link .
One of the main frontiers of today's nuclear science is the physics with radioactive ion beams (RIBs). By studying the properties of short-lived nuclei and their reactions with other nuclei, we hope to get a better understanding of the properties of nucleonic matter, the origin of the elements, the mechanism of energy generation in stars, and to provide stringent tests of the Standard Model.
ISOL'01 will focus on nuclear physics studies with radioactive ion beams at ISOL facilities. We have several good reasons to organize the meeting in Oak Ridge in 2001. The main reason is, of course, the exciting physics which can be addressed using exotic nuclei. The Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) is the first U.S. ISOL facility specializing in low-energy nuclear physics research. We believe that there is a need for a topical meeting devoted to physics at ISOL facilities worldwide and to ISOL technology; a meeting that will address both the burning physics questions as well as technical challenges and limitations. In addition, ISOL'01 is dedicated to the celebration of twenty years of science at the Holifield facility and its continuing leadership role in nuclear physics research.
In June 1981, the first beam was provided for the physics research program at the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility, the predecessor of HRIBF. For a brief history of the Holifield written by Russell L. Robinson, former Director of the Holifield, go to http://www.phy.ornl.gov/hribf/research/history.html".
