Introduction

The 4th International Conference on Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses (ENAM'04) will be held September 12-16, 2004, at the Southern Pines Conference Center at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, USA. ENAM originated from the merged AMCO and NFFS conference series held in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany, in 1992. The first ENAM was held in 1995 in Arles, France. The second and third ENAM meetings were held in 1998 (Bellaire, Michigan, USA) and 2001 (Hämeenlinna, Finland).

This Circular contains information about the structure of the program, preliminary schedule, poster session, accompanying events, and final information on the conference registration.

Scientific Program and the Structure of the Meeting

The scientific program, selected by the ENAM'04 International Advisory Committee, will consist of invited and contributed talks as well as two poster sessions. The conference sessions will begin on Sunday, September 12, at approximately 8:30 am and will end on Thursday, September 16, at approximately 6:30 pm. There will be no parallel sessions. Most days will have three two-hour sessions with a long break in the afternoon to enjoy the gardens. Each session will cover specific areas and consist of invited and contributed presentations. In order to highlight the best posters, we plan to offer 5-minute oral presentations to a number of poster contributions. Those contributions will be treated as contributed talks, and they will appear as such in the peer-reviewed proceedings.

Poster Session

Historically, poster sessions are very important to ENAM meetings. At ENAM'04, they will be held on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Participants are expected to attend their poster on the assigned evening (approximate time is 8:00 pm through 9:15 pm). Posters should be put up on Sunday and taken down on Thursday. Room and poster number will be assigned at a later date. Posters will be put up on individual easels. Each easel will be provided with a white foamcore backing - 30 inch (75 cm) x 40 inch (100 cm). Orientation can be either landscape or portrait. Stick pins will be provided. A preliminary list of posters accepted by the International Advisory Committee can be found here. All posters which pass the peer-review process will be published and will receive a journal citation.

Other Events and Special Meetings

On Monday and Tuesday evenings, following the poster sessions, we plan to have informal student/postdoc discussion sessions. Speakers from the day's sessions and the leaders in the field will be asked to make themselves available to lead the discussion and answer questions about science, new initiatives, and related topics. Such sessions were well received at ENAM'98.

Meals will be served close to the meeting area. The banquet will be held on Wednesday evening. A welcome reception will take place on the evening of September 11. Since Callaway Gardens has so many activities, there will not be an excursion. Callaway is an award-winning, 14,000-acre gardens, resort and preserve nestled in the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The gardens and attractions such as the butterfly pavilion and horticultural center are accessible via car or a 10-mile bicycle trail. Activities include golf, tennis, swimming, bicycling, fly-fishing, and target shooting. We will have bicycles available for rent at 5 USD per day. Bicycles are the preferred mode of transportation at the Gardens with a 10-mile (16 km) bicycle trail meandering through the resort and leading to the various attractions. Cars are also permitted inside the Gardens; however motorcycles are not allowed.

Note that for ENAM'04 participants, special meetings can be arranged for collaboration groups, committees or others. A limited number of rooms are available for these meetings, and we are happy to schedule a meeting for you and post it on the ENAM'04 web site. Please contact us by email at enam04@mail.phy.ornl.gov. to make arrangements.

Abstracts

The Book of Abstracts will be handed out to all registered participants during conference registration. The electronically submitted abstracts are available on the conference website.

Proceedings

In order to widely disseminate information gathered at this conference, the proceedings will be published in the European Physics Journal A Direct of Springer Publishing. The advantages of this choice are: More details, including templates and format information, will be given at a later date. The deadline for submitting the contributions is October 1, 2004. The proceedings will be closed January 15, 2005. The printed version of the proceedings will be mailed to all participants in Summer 2005.

Lodging and Meals

Callaway Gardens is located about 70 miles southwest of Atlanta in Pine Mountain, Georgia and is easily accessible by car or shuttle from Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport. The Southern Pines Conference Center at Callaway opened in the fall of 2002 with over 2000 square meters of meeting space. The meeting will take place in the large hall of the center and all accommodations and meals will be on-site.

The conference center is a short walk from the Southern Pine Cottages. Each cottage consists of two private bedrooms with attached baths. The common area includes a fully equipped kitchen, a family room with a fireplace and television, and a screened porch with ceiling fan. Although an entire cottage may be reserved, the preferred accommodation is a half-cottage. As each half-cottage has two large beds, the most economical mode is for two participants to share a half-cottage (quarter-cottage option). All meals (September 12-16) for the participant are included in the accommodations (September 11-16). The price (1 participant) for room and board are:

Meals and accommodations will be reserved and paid through the ENAM'04 website and not with Callaway Gardens. Note that accompanying persons may stay in the private and half-cottage options at no additional charge. See below for more information on accompanying persons. Entrance to the gardens is included with your paid accommodations. No refunds are possible for any parts of the package not taken.

Check-in time is at 4:00 pm on September 11 and check-out time is 11:00 am on September 17. The average high/low temperatures for September is 84/61 F (29/16 C).

Travel Information

The easiest way to travel to Callaway Gardens is to fly to Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport (ATL) which is located southwest of downtown. The Gardens are approximately 1 hour southwest of the airport by interstate highway for all but a few miles. Callaway offers an airport shuttle with one-way charges of approximately 60-80 USD (price depends on type of service and includes taxes/gratuities). Car rental at the airport is also available. For details see ENAM'04 website.

Accompanying Persons

You are encouraged to bring companions as Callaway Gardens is a resort which offers many attractions. There is no additional charge for accommodations when your companions stay in your half-cottage or private cottage. Each half of the cottage has two large beds which can sleep four persons. Meals for companions may be purchased from the conference secretary. Entrance into the gardens is included in your accommodations. Bicycles may be rented on-site. Meals can be arranged in advance at the conference office. Note that each cottage has a fully equipped kitchen.

The conference site is in a small rural town in Georgia. The nearest money-changing office will be in Atlanta which is an hour away by car. Please take care of your cash needs before you arrive at the conference.

Health Insurance

All participants are encouraged to obtain health insurance prior to arriving to the United States. The conference cannot provide insurance to the attendees. Hospitals and medical services are located nearby.

To secure IUPAP sponsorship, the organizers have provided assurance that ENAM'04 will be conducted in accordance with IUPAP principles as stated in the ICSU-Document "Universality of Science" (sixth edition, 1989) regarding the free circulation of scientists for international purposes. In particular, no bona fide scientist will be excluded from participation on the grounds of national origin, nationality, or political considerations unrelated to science.
