When you are ready to extract the files, use ` xvf' for the command, e.g.
% tar xvf foo.tar
Here is the transcript of a session with tar. Comments about Unix commands are in italics. Suppose we have just copied two archives, named foo.tar and letters.tar, and we want to extract the files in these archives. It is always a good idea to isolate files from an archive in their own subdirectory, so if the archive does not already have them in one directory we will make a new subdirectory, copy the archive to it, and then extract the files there.
