The ORNL Multicharged Ion Research Facility (MIRF)

HV Platform & ECR Ion Source

A new 250 kV high voltage platform has been installed at the ORNL Multicharged Ion Research Facility (MIRF) to extend the energy range of multicharged ions available for experimental investigations of their collisional interactions with electrons, atoms, molecules, and solid surfaces. For the production of the multiply charged ions, a new all-permanent magnet Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source, designed and fabricated at CEA/Grenoble, is being used.

Use of higher energy beams via the HV platform beamlines
(20 - 250 keV/q):

  • permits velocity matching with fast H atoms at higher neutral beam energies (Ion-atom merged beams)
  • compresses angular scattering distributions (Ion-atom merged beams, MEIBEL, COLTRIMS)
  • permits use of imaging energy-sensitive solid state detectors (MEIBEL, COLTRIMS)
  • permits more complete mapping of kinematic resonances in surface scattering neutralization (Grazing surface scattering)
  • facilitates comparison of iso-energetic singly and multicharged ion interactions (Grazing surface scattering)<
  • makes available higher equivalent center of mass electron energies (MEIBEL)
  • results in less angular and energy broadening of molecular ion projectile fragmentation products (MEIBEL, COLTRIMS, Ion-atom merged beams)
  • permits access to new high energy user beamline
